So much of this resonate and brought me back viscerally not only to times I’ve been stopped from boarding and planes but also to times I’ve shrunk myself trying to fit into the “good Muslim”. I’ve sometimes felt betrayed my “my own” and at other times betrayed them myself by trying to assimilate. Thank you for writing this piece. As Muslims I think one of the things we need to get better and better about is occupying space unapologetically and celebrating our identifies just like zohran, yourself and many others are showing us how to do.
Unapologetically occupying our complexity as Muslims is the only way forward. It’s hard, uncomfortable, and sometimes unsafe, but gets less hard, less uncomfortable, and less unsafe when more of it do it in numbers. I think the shift has already started, may it only get bigger in scale 🤍
